Slow WiFi? Time for a New Router

“OUR WIFI IS TOO SLOW” or “MY GAME IS LAGGING”

Do you have slow wifi? time for a new router then? This could be your answer to your home internet issues. In 2023 we all have an average of 25 connected devices pulling data through your ISP’s bog standard wifi router. Now I’ve done it myself, switched ISP got what seems to be a shiny new “best, award winning, turbo, whole house’ wifi router plugged it in, hit the WPS button and forgot about it. But once we have reconnected our door, bell, 4 tablets, 4 iphones, smart watches, cctv, 5 smart tellys, soundbars and digital assistants our award winning router starts to struggle a shade.

I have written a few small hacks that could help you, check it out here

Well one quick solution could be to change your router from the cheap free one your ISP has sent you, to a bespoke super powerful one from a company that just makes wifi solutions. I doesn’t have to cost the earth but it can help you get closer to the download speeds your ISP promises you.

Benefits Of Swopping Your Router

Performance and Speed

Many ISP-provided routers are basic models with limited capabilities. Upgrading to a newer router can provide better performance, faster speeds, and improved network stability, especially if you’re using multiple devices or engaging in bandwidth-intensive activities like online gaming, streaming 4K content, or video conferencing.

Advanced Features:

High-quality routers often come with advanced features like Quality of Service (QoS) settings, which allow you to prioritize specific types of internet traffic. This is useful for ensuring that activities like video streaming get higher priority over less critical tasks.

Better Coverage:

Newer routers often have improved antenna designs and technologies that provide better Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home or office. This helps eliminate dead zones and ensures a more consistent connection in all areas.

Dual-Band or Tri-Band Support:

Many modern routers support dual-band or tri-band frequencies. This allows you to use different frequency bands for different devices, reducing congestion and potentially providing better overall performance.

Security Features:

Some premium routers come with enhanced security features, such as built-in firewalls, intrusion detection, and even built-in VPN (Virtual Private Network) capabilities. These features can help protect your network and devices from potential threats.

Customization:

Higher-end routers often provide more customization options, allowing you to adjust settings to suit your specific needs. This can include setting up a guest network, controlling access to specific devices, and managing parental controls.

Firmware Updates:

Routers from reputable manufacturers often receive regular firmware updates, which can improve performance, fix bugs, and patch security vulnerabilities. ISP-provided routers may not receive updates as frequently.

Compatibility:

If you have specialized networking needs, such as connecting to certain IoT devices, home automation systems, or setting up a home server, a more advanced router can offer the necessary compatibility and features.

Future-Proofing:

Investing in a high-quality router now can help future-proof your network for upcoming technologies and higher internet speeds, ensuring that you won’t need to upgrade again in the near future.

Technical Support:

Routers from well-known brands often come with better customer support options. This can be especially useful if you encounter any technical issues that require assistance. For this reason alone, i have Netgears mesh system but this is really high end, read my post on mesh wifi here but I have recommend netgears own wifi routers to my family, after i installed the router for them not once have they had any issues.

It’s important to note that the benefits you’ll experience from upgrading to a new router depend on factors like your internet usage habits, the size of your home, the number of devices connected, and your desired features. When considering a new router, it’s recommended to research different models, read reviews, and choose one that aligns with your specific needs and budget.
