How would your life be affected if you didn’t have a back-up power supply? Every day of our lives we rely on our tech, smart home, wifi, cctv, gaming or even more importantly you could have medical equipment at home like breathing apparatus or dialysis machines. So it’s fair to say if the power went out, we’d be in the plop.

Check out the national grid for stats and info on power outages here

So would it be possible both technically and financially to install some kind of solution that could provide a back-up power supply to our houses if there was say a black out, or if you’re old enough to remember the 80’s in the UK, a power strike? You’ll be pleased to know there is and our friends at uk.ecoflow.com have an option that differs from the usual dirty diesel burning noisy generators.

Ok, Do I really need A back-up power supply?

How would your life be impacted in a power cut? a back-up power supply could really save your arse if the worst should happen, they might seem expensive but if the power goes out for a couple of hours for someone that has life dependant medical equipment, a couple of grand isn’t really an issue.

Not as life dependant but serious all the same, if you work from home permanently a power cut could cost you a fortune, especially if you are say a day trader and you’ve just dropped £30k on Royal Dutch Shell put options with no stop loss, I’m sure you’re starting to get the gist on how much we rely on electricity!!

But generators are noisy dirty and break down

I know what you’re thinking, I’m going to tell you to fit a big £5000 genny to set outside your house filling the air with diesel fumes!!! No, wrong, how about some super clean batteries that can even be charged by solar panels!! and can be retro fitted to supply your whole house.Think of them like larger but possibly portable power banks like the ones you use for your phone ( power bank post here!)

Now I’m Worried, what are the options for back-up power supply?

Whole house battery back-up power

These are exactly what the title says, battery back up that can integrate into your power system that kicks in should the power go out,(you’ll need a separate control panel for this or you could just use it as a stand alone power supply as they have 3 pin plugs as well as usb ports)

These take 20ms to switch over so there should be no interruption in your supply you may notice the lights blink that’s probably about it. The first thing you’ll know the power is out would be your neighbours knocking on your door asking why you have power and they don’t!!! They are portable so you could take them as back up power if you go camping for instance and they can be charged using E.V power points!

What will they power and how long will they last?

3.6kWh
what can a small power bank supply
10.8kWh
what can a medium power bank supply
25kWh
what can a large power bank supply

Sounds good but is it just a power station?

No, if you purchase the power control panel then you can easily integrate the battery systems into your home’s circuit.

The power control panel also manages the back-up power supply’s charging too |check out the diagram below.

The Smart Home Panel supports and fast charges up to two DELTA Pro(s) at a time, alongside their extra batteries + smart generator(s). That gives you a potential 7200W output and 25kWh of capacity at your control, enough to power pretty much anything in your home, delivering days of power during blackouts.

So as you can see it is possible to integrate a battery based back-up power supply into your home electricity network that could provide days of emergency power to 10 power circuits in the event of a power failure of any type. This way you could have the peace of mind knowing your home will have emergency power that could effectively be charged for nothing if you had solar panels, yes it’s not cheap, but as we’ve said you might need electricity for something more important than powering your PS5!!!

Can a large ‘power bank’ really power my home?

Yes, 100% you’d have to decide how much power you would really need versus how much you want to spend

What can they power?

With the right setup, you can power up to 10 circuits that would normally just plug something into

Would I have to switch stuff over or plug it in to work?

No, it can be wired into your system, should the power go out it takes 20ms to sense the power outage and switch over.
