How to upgrade to your phone to iOS 17 I’m not going to assume we all know how to do the upgrade, if say your phone is your first iPhone you might not know how to upgrade, so firstly, Open the Settings app, scroll down and tap General, and then select Software Update. If your iPhone is ready for an update, you’ll see an option to upgrade to iOS 17. Keep in mind that although iOS 17 is launching today, it may not be immediately available for everyone. If you have a phone older than the iPhone XR or XS, you won’t be able to install iOS 17; the first-generation iPhone SE is also left out. You need to plug your phone into mains power and you’ll need at least 30% battery before it will start. Also don’t start the whole upgrading process if you’re going to work or what ever as depending on your connection, server demands etc this could take 1/2 hour or more so my advice is to do this as you plug your iphone in for the night. If you can’t get to upgrading immediately, it doesn’t hurt to wait a few days to upgrade in case Apple finds some bugs to work out. Auto-correct…Corrected!!! They could of implemented this feature on it’s own and it would still be a game changer. Auto correct will now ‘learn’ how you type, so if you want to abuse your plumber because he’s fitted your toilet in your bedroom and stole your cat, your phone now won’t call him a ducking kisser! if you get me!! Iphone or bedside alarm clock? For those of you who sleep with your iPhone by your bed, this will turn it into a home hub-like assistant. When activated, popping your phone on charge and in landscape mode will have the screen display chosen widgets like the clock, calendar, photos, weather, and media playback controls. Which is similar to your apple watch, but on a slightly bigger scale, this will also be activated if you have one of those wireless charging stands. You’ll have a choice of displays, widgets or a photo frame. Check in when you’re home safe The new Check In feature in Messages automatically alerts people of your choice that you’ve arrived safely at the destination you select. If your iPhone detects that you’re no longer moving toward your destination, your loved one or friend receives your route, your cell connectivity, and your phone’s battery level. Not sure about this tbh, i mean what happens if your trying to grab a sneaky 30 minutes at home during work hours??? And i’m pretty sure the “enemy of the state”brigade will assume this is just for the government to track you!! Set multiple timers Yes, for the first time ever, you can set multiple timers to run at the same time on an iPhone. Just start a timer in the Clock app as before, and then tap the + sign at the top right to add a new one. You can label each timer so that you don’t get confused as to what they’re counting down to, just as you can with various alarms. So for instance you could be cooking various meals at home which finish at different times, so this will help you turn into Gordon at tea time!! Calls and messages The phone app will introduce customisable contact cards, which will show up when you get a call – and you can share them with someone new using AirDrop by bringing your devices close together. Voicemails are getting more useful, with live transcriptions helping you decide whether to pick up or ignore the call, while you’ll also be to leave them in video form via FaceTime. Also you can add different stickers to your messages even from different apps, as we all found it to be a crazy world when we could lightening strikes to our messages a couple of years ago…. well for a day or so anyways!! Add video effects with gestures iOS now includes eight effects, including rain, confetti, and hearts, as reactions in video calls. You can trigger them from a menu or via hand gestures in front of the iPhone’s front-facing camera; for example, if you hold up a double peace sign, confetti will rain down behind your face (much to the delight of the person on the other end of the line). These effects are available in FaceTime and third-party apps such as Zoom, but you need an iPhone 12 or newer to take advantage of the gesture controls if thats what floats your boat. Privacy and security You can now share passwords in your iCloud keychain with trusted friends and family members, while the Safari web browser will hide your private sessions behind a facial recognition lock, not for me this tbh goes against everything i say in my security posts like this one Apple’s messaging apps, and third-party ones that support it, can now flag sensitive photos and videos to you before you open them – chiefly designed to stop you receiving unwanted nude pics, might switch this off between you and me!!!! Apple has made privacy an increasingly large part of its updates and its marketing, so it’s no surprise that iOS 17 has new features intended to keep you and your data safe. Safari now lets you create multiple profiles to keep your browsing habits separate. Private Browsing tabs in Safari also require reauthorisation after 15 minutes, which keeps your private tabs hidden when you hand your phone to someone else. That latter feature is especially useful, but you have to enable it in Settings, so don’t just assume that your tabs are safe. Group chats get better in Messages It’s easy to lose the thread in large and long-running group chats. Apple tackles that

Whats new in ios17

For those of you who sleep with your iPhone by your bed, this will turn it into a home hub-like assistant.

When activated, popping your phone on charge and in landscape mode will have the screen display chosen widgets like the clock, calendar, photos, weather, and media playback controls. Which is similar to your apple watch, but on a slightly bigger scale, this will also be activated if you have one of those wireless charging stands. You’ll have a choice of displays, widgets or a photo frame.

Check in when you’re home safe

The new Check In feature in Messages automatically alerts people of your choice that you’ve arrived safely at the destination you select.

Add video effects with gestures

iOS now includes eight effects, including rain, confetti, and hearts, as reactions in video calls.

Privacy and security

You can now share passwords in your iCloud keychain with trusted friends and family members, while the Safari web browser will hide your private sessions behind a facial recognition lock, not for me this tbh goes against everything i say in my security posts like this one

Apple’s messaging apps, and third-party ones that support it, can now flag sensitive photos and videos to you before you open them – chiefly designed to stop you receiving unwanted nude pics, might switch this off between you and me!!!!

Group chats get better in Messages

It’s easy to lose the thread in large and long-running group chats. Apple tackles that problem with inline replies for Messages, which allow you to reply to a specific message with a swipe. Improved search now allows for multiple filters, helping you find what you need among all the responses. Audio messages sent in Messages also come with transcriptions, making that feature more accessible and helpful when you can’t listen to a voice message.

Photo recognition

In a big win for multi-pet households, the photos app can now recognise and distinguish between animals.

And if someone sends you a picture of a good-looking plate of food, you can tap the info button and get an online recipe selection for similar dishes, totally love this feature, as the main cook in the house, i should be able to get some good ideas out of the ‘dinner competition’ photos!!

Apparently the health app will now track my mood and mental health too….good luck with that!! New ios for apple watch and ipad too.
