Do you then pay your contract out and buy the latest one or stick with your ‘outdated’ one till you’re out of contract but hate your once-loved phone till you can change? So why are gadgets so addictive? As silly as this sounds, there is a number of scientific and psychological reasons for our “gadget addiction’ are they may not be as silly as you first thought. To me, as usual, the instant blame can be placed upon social media. Is gadget addiction even a thing? check this study by Berkley University here Disclaimer: I’ve placed that in speech marks as to not belittle the real problems of serious addictions, but remember this is a gadget blog and I’m certainly not an expert in real addictions!! The Alluring Glow: Unveiling the Psychology of why gadgets are so addictive In a world bathed in the blue light of screens, a silent epidemic grips our attention: gadget addiction. From smartphones clutched to restless hands to fitness trackers whispering seductive metrics like tracking your workouts, forget that lets track your walk to the chippy. When I got my new Apple Watch that could track my sleep, what did I do? Kept it on all night to asses my sleep, did it give me a better idea of how I slept? Did it shite! In fact, it just kept me awake every time i turned over, but at least i have the ability to track my sleep if I want!! But why, in the face of endless possibilities, do we find ourselves tethered to these glowing rectangles? The answer lies in a potent cocktail of psychological manipulation, technological allure, and the ever-present yearning for social connection. Dopamine’s Dance: The Neurochemical Hook At the heart of gadget addiction’s grip lies dopamine, the brain’s reward neurotransmitter. For me even recieving that new shiny box through the post is a buzz and the excitment only grows as i go through the unboxing!! Every notification ping, every game cleared, every curated feed refresh triggers a tiny dopamine release, a pleasurable surge reinforcing the behaviour. Social media likes and comments become virtual pats on the head, while endless game levels offer the tantalising promise of mastery and victory. This constant drip of dopamine keeps us hooked, seeking the next fix, even when the real world beckons. How many times have you been late after ‘just one more game’? Escape from the Mundane: A Digital Refuge Beyond the dopamine rush, gadgets offer an escape from the complexities of real life. And we all need a little escapism every now and then. Some people go for a run, some go out on the ale, I like to shoot virtual enemies whilst immersed in a digitally created war zone!! The humdrum of daily routines fades as we lose ourselves in virtual worlds, be it the curated perfection of Instagram or the adrenaline rush of online gaming. This escapism, while initially soothing, can become a maladaptive coping mechanism, masking anxieties and hindering emotional growth. Fear of Missing Out: The Social Siren’s Song In the age of hyperconnectivity, the fear of missing out (FOMO) casts a long shadow. Social media platforms amplify this fear, bombarding us with a curated reality of perfect lives and exciting adventures. If one of your mates gets a new smartwatch, you can handle that, but if 10 minutes on insta reveals everybody and his dog has that new kick-ass smartwatch, that’s gonna be hard to resist, your mind will play tricks on you, you’ll think ‘if I go and meet the lads and they see thing old thing, they’ll laugh me out the pub!” The constant stream of updates and notifications creates a sense of urgency, a need to stay plugged in lest we miss the next viral trend or the latest gossip. This FOMO fuels compulsive checking and scrolling, further blurring the lines between the digital and the real. The Architect’s Art: A World Designed for Engagement Gadgets are not merely passive tools; they are meticulously designed to capture and hold our attention. Algorithms tailor content to our individual preferences, feeding us with what we crave, keeping us scrolling through endless feeds, unless you know how to block ads and your privacy settings are tip-top. Variable reward schedules, like the uncertain timing of social media notifications or the unpredictable loot drops in games, fuel our anticipation and keep us coming back for more. In the UK for instance loot boxes have been considered to be a lower form of gambling and it’s being talked about being regulated by the gambling license authority. The sleek interfaces and intuitive controls provide a frictionless experience, further solidifying our digital dependency. Breaking the Chains: A Path to Digital Detox The allure of gadgets is undeniable, but it is important to remember that we hold the power to reclaim control. Recognising the psychological and technological factors that drive addiction is the first step. Mindfulness practices can help us become aware of our digital habits, allowing us to make conscious choices about how we engage with technology. You could even use timers on your phone or smartwatch to restrict your screen time. Setting boundaries, such as designated screen-free times or tech-free zones, can create space for real-world connection and introspection if you feel that’s necessary. Digital detox, a temporary break from technology, can be a powerful tool for resetting our relationship with gadgets. By

Dopamine’s Dance: The Neurochemical Hook

Why Are Gadgets So Addictive?

At the heart of gadget addiction’s grip lies dopamine, the brain’s reward neurotransmitter.

Escape from the Mundane: A Digital Refuge

where is your happy place

Beyond the dopamine rush, gadgets offer an escape from the complexities of real life.

Fear of Missing Out: The Social Siren’s Song

fomo fear of missing out on new gadgets

In the age of hyperconnectivity, the fear of missing out (FOMO) casts a long shadow. Social media platforms amplify this fear, bombarding us with a curated reality of perfect lives and exciting adventures.

If one of your mates gets a new smartwatch, you can handle that, but if 10 minutes on insta reveals everybody and his dog has that new kick-ass smartwatch, that’s gonna be hard to resist, your mind will play tricks on you, you’ll think ‘if I go and meet the lads and they see thing old thing, they’ll laugh me out the pub!”

The constant stream of updates and notifications creates a sense of urgency, a need to stay plugged in lest we miss the next viral trend or the latest gossip. This FOMO fuels compulsive checking and scrolling, further blurring the lines between the digital and the real.

The Architect’s Art: A World Designed for Engagement

Gadgets are not merely passive tools; they are meticulously designed to capture and hold our attention.

Breaking the Chains: A Path to Digital Detox

The allure of gadgets is undeniable, but it is important to remember that we hold the power to reclaim control.

By stepping away from the constant stimuli, we can reconnect with ourselves, our loved ones, and the world around us. This break can help us rediscover the joy of real-world experiences, and ultimately, return to technology with a renewed sense of balance and control.

The fight against gadget addiction is not about shunning technology entirely; it is about reclaiming our personality and establishing a healthy relationship with the digital world. By understanding the psychological and technological forces at play, we can break free from the alluring glow and reclaim the power to choose how technology serves our lives, rather than the other way around.

Also, there’s an eco issue with gadget addiction, if you’re buying the latest tech as soon as it comes out then what happens to your discarded and unloved tech? check my post on ethical tech ownership here

Final thought

Remember, the struggle against gadget addiction is a journey, not a destination. Be kind to yourself, celebrate small victories, and don’t hesitate to seek support if needed. The world beyond the screen awaits, but remember not to be too hard on yourself as long as you know that your gadget is your servant, not your master!! ( wow hitting some Jerry Springer vibes there!!)

This would also be an ideal present for any gamer in your family, as yes it is smaller but the sound quality you will get from your gaming with te Ray will be another level. and you can still expand this system into a full surround system by adding rear speakers and a sub, or multi room system with additional speakers.

Sonus Sub Gen 3

What is it?

I know I may of gone a little of track with this one but anyone who knows me will tell you I couldn’t possibly list any brand of smart speaker/home cinema without mentioning a subwoofer. I would sooner selotape my ears shut than listen to an action film or listen to any music ever written without the solid presence of a sharp kicking bass!

But anyway just like it says in the title, the Sonus Sub Gen 3 is a subwoofer that provides the most spine-kicking bass to your action film and music, the very second your budget allows, you should add a sub to any audio system you own!!

Features

  • Gives the most amaing bass
  • Wireless
  • Responsive done to 25hz
  • Only 1 cable
  • Easy set-up
  • Matches all Sonus amplified speakers/soundbars

Who’s it for

The sound guru who really needs the full home cinema environment, the sub will relieve the mids and tweeters of trying to provide you with the full sound range. Add a sub to your home cinema and all that’s missing is popcorn and a bag of £20 pick and mix that every snot-nosed kid had handled and thrown back in the tub and you’re in the cinema!!!

Conclusion

Whilst writing this article I’ve had the pleasure of testing what i can only describe of some of the best Home cinema/audio products that are available today, each one of the above speakers really does perform so well that you won’t regret spending the money on them, and as you can some if you buy now there’s some great discount to be had.

The problem is if you do have the means to buy say buy the arc, the sub and 2 surround speakers, your cinema will hate you and forget what you look like!!!

Isn’t home cinema a pain to set up

Not with Sonus, use the app and it will walk you through the whole setup process including sound optimisation

haven’t got the money for a sub just yet if i just buy the soundbar will it sound bad?

No, not at all, the mids will knock the socks off your tellys speakers and you’ll wonder why you ever listened to a film without it. But buy the sub for ultimate pleasure.

Ok, I’m listening, love the idea of new a.r glasses what are they for They have numerous uses, but the main consumer user will buy these as an alternative to playing your console games on your telly!! It effectively gives you 2 wall sized screens to play on by the way of new micro Oled screen from Sony, the effective screen size is apparently 330 inches with would cost you a great deal more than an 80 inch oled from your local telly shop! The company claims they are much better for eyes, gives you cinema like sound and a gaming experience you won’t forget. Sounds Good, What can i use them with So you can use them with all next gen gaming consoles, ps5, Xbox x and Switch but you will need a sender unit called the beam to use it with these. So you can basically use them with anything with a USB C connection. So Mac Book, ipad, iphones, Android tabs, steam deck etc. Check out the full stats here at Xreal’s website. Love it How much are these New A.R glasses Here’s the kicker, they’re not cheap, £399 or £449 for the Pro version!! yikes! I know! And even when you get them, if you wanna play call of Duty on your ps5 on them you’re pulling out your credit card for another £200 for the Beam unit. When are they out? Preorder at the minute (October 2023) but they are expected to be available November some time from Xreal themselves or Amazon. What are they like to use They’re pretty lightweight. The Xreal Air 2 comes in at 72g and the Air 2 Pro glasses at 75g. The specs also come with a few easily swappable nose clips, which make it easy to adjust the position and fit the AR gadget. Those of you who wear glasses will appreciate the free optional frame attachment that allows you to equip the AR glasses with prescription lenses – though will have to pay extra for the actual lenses. The Xreal Air 2 glasses are comfy to wear for extended periods of time for another reason. The biggest issue of some rival devices is that the bridge of the glasses (which touches your face just above your nose) can get annoyingly hot – and can do so after barely five minutes of use.  One thing I love about the pro version is the electrochromic lens that adjust automatically to the back ground light and you can set the level of opaqueness ( if thats a word!) from 100% ( totally blacked out and immersive) all the way down to 25% where you can see the outside world The Xreal Air 2 Pro glasses offer a solid performance boost over their predecessor. When it comes to visuals, the Sony 0.55 Micro-OLED display does an impressive job. Thanks to the 25% boost in brightness the glasses have received (and the calibration Xreal has done to get the specs TÜV Rheinland certified for color accuracy) I felt that colors look more vibrant than on the original Xreal Air glasses. The contrast in dark scenes is also pretty darn good, which is to be expected from an OLED screen.  The 100,000:1 contrast ratio and 500nits brightness might not look like a lot on paper – they’re what you’d expect from more budget-friendly projectors that aren’t all that impressive – but because the glasses aren’t attempting to throw the image across the room they’re able to use the same specs to deliver a much higher-quality picture. Only snag is if you want a moan is the display is ‘only’ 1080 HD I would persoanlly think for this money you should be looking at 4K at least. Sound-wise they seem to be on pint although a few users have reported a bit of audio leak that might annoy other people in the room but you could always try some bluetooth ear buds like the ones i tested here and the bass is a bit gutless Do I Need Them ? If you have a spare £400 hanging about and you’re a total tech junkie ( like me) then yes probably, my best advice to you would be, wait for them to hit high street shops and go and try them or order them off Amazon and if you don’t think they’re worth the money… send them back!!! They seem like a great idea that could have many uses, I’ll probably give them a go, but hey, I need new tech in my life!!!

The battery life, rated at 2 hours, is closer to 1.5 hours during gaming, which is shorter than the Quest 2’s battery life. The controller and finger tracking are not the most accurate, and the headset’s 90Hz refresh rate can cause a trailing effect and a screen door effect around the periphery. The setup process can be fiddly and glitchy, and the system software is not as refined as some of its competitors. These features enhance the audio experience, provide better control, and offer a more personalised and comfortable fit. Now personally i’ve never been a fan of apples airpods, for me they cancelled calls if i turned my head too quick and the sound quality of music reminded me of a 1980’s Harry Moss cassette player in a Mk11 ford escort (showing my age there!!) but theres are supposed to be better! Sonos Era 300 Sonus is taking movable audio to a new level with this small but spacial speaker. Featuring 6 drivers and wait for it…. Dolby Atmos… in a portable speaker!!! Sonus say this is the most advanced speaker they have produced and I can’t argue with them. Coming in a £449 this isn’t a budget model but Sonus have been at the top of the home smart home cinema market for a while now and this doesn’t disappoint. By the way if you’re not sure what the hype is on Dolby Atmos check my post on that subject here Features What we love ❤️ What we hate 🤬 Verdict ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sonus might even be able to tempt me away from Bose with this!! Conclusion There is some pretty cool stuff out there this year, but i think i’ve proved there’s some pretty disappointing gear out there too, at nutty prices. I don’t mind paying a premium price for good tech that makes my life better, but don’t bring stuff out that just doesn’t justify the higher price…..we just won’t buy it, but I’ll write about it!!!!

  • Console-Class Control: The Razer Edge comes with the Kishi V2 Pro controller, a clip-on mobile game controller that offers a console-like gaming experience. The controller features HyperSense haptics, providing tactile feedback for a more engaging gameplay experience. The combination of the tablet’s powerful hardware and the Kishi V2 Pro controller allows for precise and responsive control, making it a great choice for gamers who prefer a traditional gaming setup.

What we hate 🤬

  • Outdated Android version: The Razer Edge runs on Android 12, which may not be the latest version of the operating system at the time of its release. This could potentially limit access to the latest features and security updates.
  • Limited availability of the Kishi V2 Pro Controller: The Kishi V2 Pro Controller, which is included with the Razer Edge, cannot be purchased separately. This means that if the controller gets damaged or lost, users will have to buy a new Razer Edge package to get a replacement.
  • Thicker and heavier design: Compared to other tablets, the Razer Edge has a thicker and heavier design, which may not be as comfortable for extended gaming sessions or portability.

Verdict

⭐️⭐️⭐️. seems ok but very niche. i’d sooner have a console persoanlly.

Victrola Stream Onyx Record Player

: A turntable that wirelessly connects and casts music to your Sonos devices. It is part of the Works with Sonos program and has an Audio Technica VM-95 cartridge.

In our digital, no physical product age this seems like the perfect addition to your home audio set up if you still have vinyl in your music collection but want to play it in your kick ass multi room sonus system.

Features

  • Works with Sonos: The Stream Onyx has been verified by the Works with Sonos program, allowing you to wirelessly stream your favourite vinyl records through your entire Sonos system.

  • Audio Technica AT-VM95E Cartridge: The Onyx comes with a premium Audio Technica AT-VM95E cartridge, ensuring high-fidelity sound reproduction
  • Victrola Silicone Slipmat: The included silicone slipmat helps to keep your records in top condition during playback1.

  • High-Quality Design and Materials: The Onyx features a modern design with high-quality materials, making it a statement piece in any listening spaceThe matte black finish and aluminium tonearm with an adjustable counterweight not only contribute to its aesthetic appeal but also ensure dynamic frequency response and increased clarity during playback
  • Premium Audio Technica AT-VM95E Cartridge: The Onyx comes with a premium Audio Technica AT-VM95E cartridge, delivering high-fidelity sound reproduction.

What we hate 🤬

  • Price: The Stream Onyx is priced at £900 which may be considered expensive compared to other record players on the market. While it offers the convenience of Sonos integration, there are alternative options available that can connect to Sonos speakers using a Sonos Amp, which may provide a more reliable streaming experience.
  • Tinkering Required for Sonos Integration: Some users have reported that the Stream Onyx may require some tinkering to properly integrate with Sonos and wired gear. This could be a potential inconvenience for users who are looking for a seamless and hassle-free setup.

Verdict

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. expensive for what it is but its quality and sound reproduction shows

Apple AirPods Pro 2:

The AirPods Pro 2, also known as the second generation of AirPods Pro, come with several new and improved features compared to their predecessors.

Features

  • Custom high-excursion Apple driver
  • Custom high dynamic range amplifier
  • Adaptive Audio
  • Active Noise Cancellation
  • Transparency mode
  • Conversation Awareness
  • Personalized Volume
  • Loud Noise Reduction
  • Vent system for pressure equalisation
  • Personalised Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking
  • Adaptive EQ.

What we love ❤️

  • Superior audio quality: The AirPods Pro (2nd generation) feature an upgraded H2 chip that powers smarter noise cancellation and three-dimensional sound.
  • Adaptive Audio and Active Noise Cancellation: The H2-powered AirPods Pro now feature Adaptive Audio, which automatically prioritises sounds that need your attention as you move through the world. By seamlessly blending Active Noise Cancellation with Transparency mode when you need it, Adaptive Audio delivers the right mix of sound for any environment. The AirPods Pro earbuds offer up to 2x more Active Noise Cancellation, plus Adaptive Transparency, for an immersive sound experience.
  • Comfortable and secure fit: Four pairs of silicone tips are included with the AirPods Pro to fit a wide range of ears. The tips create an acoustic seal that closes in the sound and helps keep out noise, while also securing the AirPods Pro in place The earbuds are sweat and water-resistant, making them suitable for workouts and outdoor activities

What we hate

  • Similar design: The 2nd generation AirPods Pro looks nearly identical to the 1st generation model. While this may not be a significant drawback for some users, those who were expecting a more updated or unique design may be disappointed.
  • Not the best in sound quality and ANC: The 2nd generation AirPods Pro, while offering improvements in sound quality and ANC, are not the best-sounding wireless earbuds or class-leading in ANC when compared to some competitors. Users who prioritize these features may consider other options.
  • Price: The 2nd generation AirPods Pro is priced the same as its predecessor, which may be a drawback for users who were hoping for a more affordable upgrade option. Some users may find it difficult to justify the cost of upgrading for the relatively minor improvements offered by the 2nd generation model.

Verdict

⭐️⭐️⭐️. better but not the loads better it should of been.

Sonos Era 300

Sonus is taking movable audio to a new level with this small but spacial speaker. By the way if you’re not sure what the hype is on Dolby Atmos check my post on that subject here

Features

  • Spatial Audio: The Era 300 is designed to deliver immersive spatial audio, creating a 360-degree soundstage that envelops the listener. This is achieved through its six drivers, including a centre channel, left and right drivers, an upward-firing channel, and two woofers.
  • Dolby Atmos Support: Supercharged by Dolby Atmos, the Era 300’s lateral and overhead channels create an all-encompassing soundstage.
  • Versatile Connectivity: The Era 300 is compatible with WiFi 6 and can connect to any 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax 2.4 GHz/5 GHz broadcast-capable router. It also features Bluetooth and a USB-C port for added versatilit2.
  • Intuitive Touch Controls: The speaker’s touch controls allow for quick, screen-free control. Users can tap or swipe to play, pause, adjust the volume, and group their Sonos speakers.
  • One App for Control: The Sonos app brings all your content and settings together in one place for effortless control from any room.
  • Voice Control: The Era 300 supports Amazon Alexa voice control, allowing users to play music and control their system with hands-free ease.
  • Sustainable Design: Sonos is committed to a sustainable future, and the Era 300 features 40% post-consumer recycled plastics and energy-efficient operation.
  • Compatibility with Sonos Ecosystem: The Era 300 is part of the Sonos S2 ecosystem, which enables in-app control from over 100 streaming services, including Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, Audible, and Qobuz.

What we love ❤️

  • Immersive Spatial Audio: The Era 300 is designed to deliver a captivating spatial audio experience, with six optimally positioned drivers all around the front, sides, and top to support Dolby Atmos. This allows for a 360-degree soundstage that envelops the listener, creating a more immersive and realistic audio experience.
  • Versatile Connectivity: The Era 300 offers various connectivity options, including WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, and AirPlay 2. This allows users to stream high-quality audio from a wide range of devices and services, ensuring a seamless listening experience.
  • Multi-Functionality: In addition to its impressive audio capabilities, the Era 300 can also be used as Dolby Atmos surround speakers, delivering multi-channel rears for a maximum 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos home theatre experience. This makes it a versatile addition to any home entertainment setup.

What we hate 🤬

  • Connection Issues: Some users have reported connectivity issues with the Era 300, such as difficulty in connecting the speaker to their network or experiencing sound dropping out when using a stereo pair with a sub. These issues can be frustrating and may require troubleshooting or assistance from Sonos support.
  • Not Ideal for Stereo Music: While the Era 300 can play stereo audio, it may not provide the best stereo music experience compared to other Sonos speakers like the Sonos Five. Users who prioritise stereo music performance may find other Sonos models more suitable for their needs.

Verdict

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sonus might even be able to tempt me away from Bose with this!!

Conclusion

There is some pretty cool stuff out there this year, but i think i’ve proved there’s some pretty disappointing gear out there too, at nutty prices. I don’t mind paying a premium price for good tech that makes my life better, but don’t bring stuff out that just doesn’t justify the higher price…..we just won’t buy it, but I’ll write about it!!!!

Want to add extra stuff into your smart? check my post here on the top 5 smart gadgets you need here

Remember with all these devices, security is super important, check my post on securing your smart home here

Let’s list the 3 best smart home systems for 2023 that you can buy on the high street

Apple Home Pod 2 Price: £299

apple home pod the best smart home systems for 2023

For the purpose of this test, i’m going to use Apples home pod which is essentially a smart speaker but provides a perfect platform to run Apples Homekit software, please note you don’t have to buy the hub, you can run it off your ipad

Features

  • Immersive, high-fidelity audio
  • High-excursion woofer
  • Beamforming array of five tweeters
  • Spatial Audio
  • Room sensing
  • Stereo pair capable you can only pair another home hub speaker though
  • Multi-room audio
  • Smart home hub using apples home kit
  • Sound Recognition- Can detect smoke, carbon monoxide or fire alarms and send you a message
  • Temperature and humidity sensor
  • Private and secure

What can Homekit do?

HomeKit isn’t a product or software; it’s a framework that links smart home products together and adds new capabilities to devices like lights, locks, cameras, thermostats, plugs, and more. HomeKit lets you control smart home products using apps on your iPhone iPad or Mac, or simple Siri voice commands.

While controlling smart home products with ‌Siri‌ or with an ‌iPhone‌ is convenient, the real magic of HomeKit comes when you have multiple HomeKit-enabled products because you can control them all at once using scenes or set up automations so that they activate automatically.

You can set up a good night mode where it will make sure all your smart locks are secure.

What We Love ❤️

  • Centralised control: Apple Home Hub allows you to control all your smart home devices from a single dashboard, making it convenient and easy to manage your home automation5.
  • Privacy and security: Home Hub devices, such as HomePod and Apple TV, are built with robust security measures and privacy policies, ensuring the protection of your data and restricting the ability of smart device makers to collect and share your information5.
  • Support for emerging standards: Home Hub devices support connectivity with Matter and Thread, two emerging wireless standards that aim to make the smart home more versatile and cross-compatible5.
  • Integration with Apple ecosystem: If you already use Apple devices, such as iPhones, iPads, or Macs, integrating a Home Hub into your smart home setup will be seamless and provide a cohesive user experience5.
  • Easy setup: Apple’s HomeKit ecosystem makes it extremely easy to set up devices, usually taking seconds to minutes, and the Home app is well-organized and intuitive, even for casual smart home users

What We Hate 🤬

  • Limited compatibility: Home Hub devices only work with Apple devices, so if you have non-Apple smart home devices, they may not be compatible with the Home Hub ecosystem
  • Cost: Home Hub devices, such as HomePod and Apple TV, can be more expensive compared to other smart home hubs on the market
  • iPad limitations: While iPads can be used as Home Hubs, they are not supported on the new, more reliable, and efficient Home architecture, which is available as a separate upgrade in the Home app.
  • Dependence on Apple services: To fully utilize the features of a Home Hub, you need to be signed in to iCloud with the Apple ID used to set up your HomeKit and Matter accessories, which may be a drawback for users who prefer not to use Apple services
  • Limited third-party options: Apple does not currently offer third-party options for Home Hub devices, so you are limited to the available Apple products for your smart home setup

Why should I buy it?

If you’re like me and have a world of Apple products, then this is a logical step, like most of these systems they only really work well or at all with products from their own catalogue, there is a full list of compatible on Apples website here the list is massive and is only gonna get bigger.

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I know you can only use Apple stuff with it, but I’m already all in with Apple!!

Amazon Alexa £184.99 Echo Show

the best smart home systems for 2023 amazon alexa

Alexa and it’s numerous little speakers have been around in the smart home sector for a while now, I don’t know many people who haven’t at some time owned a dot!! Amazons system like Apples is compatible with a wide range of kit including many non-amazon products, eg most Phillips hue lights will work with alexa.

Again remember, the devices you see above are broadly mini speakers/screens. For the purpose of this article the features i’ll list will be for the echo show, but you can control your connected devices on any amazon assistant platform using amazon alexas smart assistant with your voice or on the app on your phone etc is what gives you the home automation control when you have the corresponding smart device paired and connected to your Alexa device and account. With Alexa, the app has to ‘learn’ about the device you’re connecting (don’t worry this is just another way of basically downloading a driver so it will work!!!)

What Can Alexa Do?

This is where alexa comes in to it’s own, you basically “wake’ it up by saying “Alexa” then give here an instruction (remember if you want it to control some smart home tech you’ve got to enable it first in Devices)

  • “Alexa, turn on/off the kitchen lights.”
  • “Alexa, dim lights to 40%.”
  • “Alexa, set the temperature to 73.”
  • “Alexa, lock my front door.”
  • “Alexa, show me the [camera room location].” (This only works on Echo Show and Fire devices.)
  • “Alexa, turn on/off the [plug name].”

You can set up room groups so they all perform a linked action on request, e.g you could say “Alexa, set the front room for seduction!” so the lights dim, room temp is 75 and Barry White is playing on the device, i’m sure you get where i’m coming from!!

Features

  • Motorised screen automatically rotates to track you pretty cool if you’ve got cctv connected that gets triggered you don’t have to grab it to see who’s robbing your lawn mower!!
  • Loud, crisp sound
  • Built-in Zigbee hub for smart home device control
  • Useful home security features

What We Love ❤️

  • Easy to Operate: Amazon Alexa is a cloud-based voice service that is easy to use and can be operated by anyone, making it a convenient tool for both kids and adults
  •  Control of Smart Home Devices: Alexa can seamlessly connect and control various smart home devices through voice commands, allowing users to manage their homes without lifting a finger.
  •  Music and Entertainment: Alexa offers non-stop music and entertainment options, making it a great tool for playing your favorite songs, podcasts, or audiobooks
  •  Timers and Alarms: Alexa makes setting and using timers and alarms tremendously easy, helping users stay organised and on schedule
  •  Integration with Third-Party Devices: Alexa is compatible with a wide range of third-party smart home devices, allowing users to choose from a variety of options and customize their smart home setup

What We Hate 🤬

  •  Privacy Concerns: One of the potential downsides of using Alexa is the privacy concerns associated with having a voice-activated device in your home, but you can say that about all 3 systems here!
  •  Reliance on Technology: Using Alexa and other smart home devices may lead to increased reliance on technology, which can have negative effects on social interaction and personal well-being,
  •  Music Quality: While Alexa offers a wide range of music options, some users have reported that the music quality is not as good as other smart home systems, such as Google Assistant
  •  Limited Smart Display Options: Compared to Google Assistant, Alexa has a more limited range of smart display options, which may be a drawback for users who want to view security camera feeds or other visual information
Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Just because you can control 100’s of devices with it and it can cut to cctv images with the show.

Google Nest £219.99

the 3 best smart home systems for 2023 google nest hub

And last but not least, Googles answer to the other 3, again you have adecent choice of device to be the central hub of your smart home with the Nest Hub max ( as shown above) being the flag ship. This also can control a whole host of device, albeit not as many as the Alexa units, but I’d be surprised if you couldn’t find a compatible unit to control the light in your home gym for example.

Features

  • Music. Music on the Google Nest Hub. …
  • Video. Watching Youtube on the Google Nest Hub. …
  • Photo Frame. Photo Frame is a non-stop slideshow of your favorite pics. …
  • Smart Automations. This is where the Nest Hub gets interesting. …
  • Google Shopping.
  • integrated YouTube, Netflix, and Spotify:
  • can be control with hand gestures

What We Love ❤️

  •  Easy to use and set up The Nest Hub is user-friendly, and its setup process is quick and straightforward
  •  Integrated streaming services: You can enjoy YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, and other streaming services on the Nest Hub, making it a versatile entertainment device.
  •  Smart home control: The Hub can efficiently manage various smart home devices, allowing you to control lights, cameras, and more from a single interface
  •  Sleep tracking capabilities: The second-generation Nest Hub offers sleep tracking, recording metrics such as sleep duration and respiratory rate. It can provide tips and recommendations based on your sleep habits
  •  Affordable price: The Nest Hub is reasonably priced, making it a cost-effective option for those looking to enhance their smart home experience

What We Hate 🤬

  •  No video calling: The Nest Hub lacks a camera, which means you can see the person you’re talking to during a video call, but they can’t see you, just seems mad this, why spend all the time designing a unit with a screen and then not put a camera in it?
  •  Small display: The 7-inch display of the Nest Hub may feel inadequate, especially when compared to larger smart displays like the Nest Hub Max and we hate feeling inadequate when it comes to size!
  •  Limited compatibility with Google Workplace: The Nest Hub does not offer full compatibility with Google Workplace, which can be a drawback for users who rely on this productivity suite. Which seems strange Amazon could do this.
  •  Sleep sensing can be fickle: While the sleep tracking feature is a pro, some users have reported that it may not always provide accurate or consistent data.
  •  Gestures can be unreliable: The Hub’s Quick Gestures feature, which allows you to control certain functions with hand movements, may not always work as expected and what’s more annoying than a cool feature that doesn’t work?
Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Not my favourite by any means, smaller screens, no vid calls make this bottom of the pile for me.

Conclusion: My results for the 3 best smart home systems for 2023 are:

1st Place

Google Alexa

Connects to Hundreds of Devices

2nd Place

Apple Home Hub

Works Seamless with Apple products with easy set up

3rd Place

Google Nest

Missing and unreliable features

Smart Robot Hoover Buyers Guide https://toptech7.com/smart-robot-hoover-buyers-guide?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=smart-robot-hoover-buyers-guide https://toptech7.com/smart-robot-hoover-buyers-guide#comments Mon, 25 Sep 2023 21:38:01 +0000 https://toptech7.com/?p=1061 I hate hoovering, i knock stuff over, trip over the cable and bang my ankles!!! imagine how cool it would be to come home from work and your house was perfectly hoovered and your tricky little smart robot hoover had returned to it’s charging base so it was ready for more cleaning? Sound too good to be true right? wrong!! you can now buy that very device!! you can even get one that can hoover AND mop! which is perfect if you have carpet in your lounge and tiles in your kitchen. Check our smart robot hoover buyers guide and know what your on about if you decide you want a hoovered house with without all the hassle of hoovering the gaff yourself!! For an in depth review of my favourite smart robot hoover check my post here What You Need To Know When Buying A Smart Robot Hoover Cleaning Performance: Evaluate the cleaning performance of the robot vacuum. Look for models with strong suction power and efficient cleaning algorithms that can effectively remove dirt, dust, and debris from various surfaces like hardwood floors, carpets, or tiles. Consider models with advanced cleaning features like multi-surface brushes or dual-action brushes for thorough cleaning. Also check what you actually need, are your floors all hard or are some carpet and some tiles on the same level, remember although these are really good, they still can’t go upstairs on their own!!! So if you want your whole house cleaning you’re buying 2 of these babies!!! Navigation and Mapping: Check the navigation and mapping capabilities of the robot vacuum. Advanced models use sensors, cameras, or laser mapping technologies to navigate and create maps of your home, allowing for efficient cleaning patterns and avoiding obstacles. Look for models that can map multiple rooms and provide customisable cleaning zones or no-go areas. As cheaper models are easily confused and miss parts of unmapped rooms. Battery Life and Charging: Assess the battery life and charging capabilities of the robot vacuum. Longer battery life is desirable, especially for larger homes, as it allows the robot vacuum to clean for extended periods without needing frequent recharging. Look for models that automatically return to the charging dock when the battery is low and can resume cleaning from where they left off after recharging. Dustbin Capacity and Filtration: Consider the dustbin capacity and filtration system of the robot vacuum. A larger dustbin capacity reduces the frequency of emptying, especially for homes with more significant cleaning needs. Additionally, look for models with high-efficiency filters like HEPA filters, which capture small particles and allergens, ensuring cleaner air quality. The ultra top end of the market smart robot hoovers can actually self-empty too! But you’re looking at major dough for these, like £1300 upwards. Smart Connectivity and Control: Check for smart connectivity and control features in the robot vacuum. This for me is a no brainer, we all know what can happen to tech, you could having your Sunday morning lie in and your new robot friend starts the cleaning, grab your phone and switch that thing off!!! You don’t wanna have to chase it round the house trying to switch it off when you’re hung over!! Look for models that can be controlled through a smartphone app, allowing you to start, stop, schedule cleanings, and adjust settings remotely. Compatibility with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant is also a convenient feature for hands-free control. Virtual Boundaries and No-Go Zones: Consider models that offer virtual boundaries or no-go zones. This feature allows you to set virtual barriers or areas where the robot vacuum should not enter, preventing it from going into specific rooms or sensitive areas. For instance you could have a pet that gets spooked out by your new smart robot hoover, you get home not to find your house new and clean, but your hoover is in a thousand bits and your dog needs a trip to the vet!! Multi-Room Cleaning and Mapping: If you have a larger home or multiple floors, look for robot vacuums that support multi-room cleaning and mapping. These models can remember multiple maps, allowing them to clean different areas of your home without needing to remap each time. or clean different surfaces like carpets and hard surfaces. Height and Clearance: Assess the height and clearance of the robot vacuum. Ensure that it can fit under furniture, beds, and other low-clearance areas where traditional vacuum cleaners might not reach. A slimmer profile and lower height enable the robot vacuum to access more areas for thorough cleaning, but make sure you do your measurements right or it might get stuck under the bed!! Maintenance and Accessories: Consider the maintenance requirements and availability of accessories for the robot vacuum. Look for models with easily removable and washable brushes or filter components. Check if replacement parts like brushes, filters, or batteries are readily available and affordable. Brand Reputation and Customer Reviews: Research the reputation of the brand and read customer reviews to gauge the overall satisfaction with the robot vacuum. What You Need To Know When Buying A Smart Robot Hoover

Cleaning Performance:

Evaluate the cleaning performance of the robot vacuum.

Check the navigation and mapping capabilities of the robot vacuum.

Battery Life and Charging:

Assess the battery life and charging capabilities of the robot vacuum. Longer battery life is desirable, especially for larger homes, as it allows the robot vacuum to clean for extended periods without needing frequent recharging. Look for models that automatically return to the charging dock when the battery is low and can resume cleaning from where they left off after recharging.

Dustbin Capacity and Filtration:

Consider the dustbin capacity and filtration system of the robot vacuum.

Smart Connectivity and Control:

Check for smart connectivity and control features in the robot vacuum.

Virtual Boundaries and No-Go Zones:

Consider models that offer virtual boundaries or no-go zones.

Multi-Room Cleaning and Mapping:

If you have a larger home or multiple floors, look for robot vacuums that support multi-room cleaning and mapping. These models can remember multiple maps, allowing them to clean different areas of your home without needing to remap each time. or clean different surfaces like carpets and hard surfaces.

Height and Clearance:

Assess the height and clearance of the robot vacuum.

Maintenance and Accessories:

Consider the maintenance requirements and availability of accessories for the robot vacuum. Look for models with easily removable and washable brushes or filter components. Check if replacement parts like brushes, filters, or batteries are readily available and affordable.

Brand Reputation and Customer Reviews:

Research the reputation of the brand and read customer reviews to gauge the overall satisfaction with the robot vacuum. Established brands with a history of producing reliable and durable robot vacuums are often a safer choice.

Price and Value for Money:

Determine your budget range and compare prices across different robot vacuums. Consider the overall value for money by assessing the combination of cleaning performance, features, navigation capabilities, and brand reputation offered by each model.

Warranty and Customer Support:

Check the warranty offered by the manufacturer and the availability of customer support. A solid warranty and responsive customer support can provide assistance if any issues arise with the robot vacuum.

By considering these factors, you can make an informed decision and choose a robot vacuum that aligns with your specific cleaning needs, budget, and desired features. Remember to read expert reviews, compare prices from reputable retailers, and if possible, try to demo or test the robot vacuum to assess its cleaning performance and navigation abilities.

Do I Need One?

Need? you could say no-one needs one and everybody needs one. Need would depend on either if you need to cut down on your cleaning time or if you’re disabled this could be a game changer, I think want and desire is more apparent with this cool piece of tech. Yes i really want one because i hate hoovering, could i justify spending that much money one one??? yeah probably, but i’m a sucker for time saving tech.

How does it know when to start cleaning?

Answer: they come with an app where you can program a schedule

What if i live on 2 floors

unfortunately you’ll either have to carry it upstairs for one day then back down the next or if you’re a real player….buy 2!!

i have carpet and tiles

simple buy one that mops and hoovers!!
