My Review of Private Internet Access

I have written a couple of articles on whether you need a VPN (check it out here if you’re in doubt) and how to use one but as there are sooo many options how do you pick? so I thought I would post a review of the excellent VPN that I use and that’s Private Internet Access.

Why Do i Need Private Internet Access?

So, to quickly recap, the benefits of a VPN are:

  • Your ISP ( or anybody else) can snoop in on your internet activity
  • Your speed can’t be choked if you do a lot of streaming or other high-usage devices
  • No Geographic Stream restrictions
  • More secure connection

But Why ‘Private Internet Access’ ?

The initial draw for me was the fact I could connect unlimited devices to Private Internet Access without extra charge, in my research I found many would only allow 7,5 or in some cases just 1 device, which let’s face it, isnt worth the lecky it would use to download it in the first place.

Installation

If you can download and install a game then you can download this easy. it auto installs, totally basic stuff.

Set Up

Again, really easy, just run the set up file, open up the app you can then select what server you want your connection to ghost from.

A point to remember is that, the further away you are from the sever that you have selected, the slower your connection will be.

Performance and Use .

There is a slight slowdown in download speeds, but remember that’s the price you’ll pay for bouncing your data worldwide to be encrypted. Cnet reckons you’ll see slowdowns of 50% ( check here) but I tested my connection with the VPN on and off and I got no more variation than you would doing a dozen speed checks over an hour, check my speed check data:

Here I have switched on Private Internet Access. (Green Tick ✅) There is a slight slow-down but at 107MB A 6mb drop isn’t going to make much difference is it? and it’s certainly no where near cnets claims of 50%!!!

Conclusion

For me the biggest downside to having a VPN is the possibility of detrimental speeds, we have all become so demanding when it comes to internet speeds, remember the little blue line that you used to watch whilst waiting for a page to load?? When i read the post on cnet stating a 50% speed drop I thought, there’s no way i could handle that much, and after testing a couple of rivals, i did notice a drop in speed that would be enough for me to delete to VPN and never go there again! For those totally new to VR gaming check out my post explaining the different set ups available here Vr gaming has been around for a while now and has come a long way, you may think you need a Pc that is powerful enough to make you a bitcoin millionaire and costs as much as a Bentley, but you’d be wrong with the Quest series, as one of the Meta Quest 3 main features (same for the Quest2 ) is you can set it up without a pc!! You don’t even need an Aldi special laptop to set up your shiny new quest 3 headset as it has its own Operating system all you need is a facebook account. Now don’t worry if you don’t want to get pulled into the world of facebook posting, you can just create an account, note the login and away you go ( no need for endless pictures of your lunch, or random messages that you are fuming with no extra explanation!) Meta Quest 3 Main Features One thing I love about my Quest is that if I don’t like a game for whatever reason i can simply use the app to request a refund as long as I have’t owned the game for longer that 2 weeks or played it for more than 2 hours Thy’ve Made it Smaller Even though its coming in slightly heavier than the Quest 2 ( but a great deal lighter that the Quest Pro), they have made the overall unit smaller that the quest 2 which reduce player fatigue, not that you’ll get that fatigued after playing for just over 2 hours before the battery dies on you!! Price The Meta Quest 3 now comes in 2 versions, Technically they are identical apart from one thing, the storage size. 128gb is around £479 512gb is £612 which seems a lot but you’re getting 4 times the storage and the game sizes are getting bigger and bigger. So if you intend to make this your primary gaming platform, it might be worth while going for the 512gb version. If you only intend to play it once a week or so and just have a few games installed, then the 128gb will suffice. Bose is my go to brand, i love bose for the sound fullness if nothing else. This one comes in a penny under our limit and i love it, at has dolby atmos ( amazing when you have an atmos source). has 5 internal speakers, built in alexa and supports apple air play, spotify connect an chromecast and HDMI eARC input that’s essential to getting Dolby Atmos soundtracks on board in the first place, One major thumbs down is the fact that it dosn’t come with an external subwoofer so the bass is gutless. So that means if you want the bass for action movies or rave nights you’re gonna have to find another £300 for the sub! bit of a downer that for me.
